Promoting Adoption vs. Buying

Bringing home a new pet is a big decision, one that requires many variables to be considered. An estimated 100.000 people in Serbia will add a new pet to their families this year. If more of them would choose to adopt a pet, instead of buying one, we could improve the number of saved animals significantly and contribute to the ultimate goal No Homeless Pets in Serbia.

TOP 5 REASONS TO ADOPT A PET
1
You Get the Satisfaction of Saving Lives

Estimates vary, but there’s no getting around the fact many dogs and cats are either killed or euthanized (“put to sleep”) each year in Serbia. If you choose to adopt, you have the gratification of knowing that you are helping to solve the problem of homeless pets in Serbia. You are also making a choice not to support many puppy and kitten mills which are factory-style breeding facilities that put profit far above the welfare of animals. By adopting instead of buying a pet, you are reducing the number of homeless pets and your pet will thank you!

2
You Get the Perfect Pet

Animal associations like Pet Mondo have plenty of healthy, well-behaved pets waiting for a home. We examine and vaccinate all cats and dogs that we rescue, and we spay or neuter them before adoption. It is a common belief that animals end up homeless because they were abused or behaved badly. In truth, many animals become strays for reasons that have more to do with their previous owners than the pets themselves: divorce, moving, lack of time, and financial constraints are among the most common reasons why pets lose their homes.

3
You Will Save Money

Adopting a pet from any animal shelter is far less expensive than buying a pet from a breeder or through other sources. Buying a pet can easily cost €200 to €500 or more. If your heart is set on a purebred dog, you can still look at shelters or pet associations like ours as the purebreds are often given up for adoption as well. Perfectly “perfect” animals of all breeds, shapes, ages and sizes are available at shelters and rescue groups. Just because an animal ends up there doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with them. They are just in need of a second chance.

4
You Can Choose a Pet of Any Age

Although puppies and kittens are cute, they can require a lot of work to train. If you adopt an adult pet, there’s a possibility you can avoid some of the hassles related to house-training and teething, which are associated with puppies and kittens. Of course, if you prefer a puppy or kitten, Pet Mondo and many other shelters and pet associations have plenty of those available as well. An adopted pet is every bit as loving, intelligent and loyal as a purchased pet, even if you get a puppy, adult or older animal.

5
You Can have a Support System

Pet Mondo often provides support for new owners because keeping pets in good homes is in the best interest of our association. So if you are worried about health issues, want advice on what kind of dog food to buy, or have other pet care questions, we will probably have opinions and advice to share. All animals from our Pet Mondo family are cared for and brought up to health by our association. Our supporters regularly check up on our adopted pets, often providing a financial help for pet owners that have fallen on tough times.
